Why use a web content management system?

Why use a CMS?A web content management system is CMS software, implemented as a web application, that allows users to create and manage content online, typically on websites. It is an increasingly popular tool as clients seek greater control over their websites, and it comes in many different forms and shapes. Some are open-source systems and thus free, and for others you have to pay. Quality and user-friendliness vary dramatically, but the end result is always the same: a CMS allows even less web-savvy people to edit their website’s HTML code without having to have knowledge about web design and web development.

All these reasons speak for clients wanting to have a CMS with their website, but don’t content management systems take work away from the designer? There seems to be a preconception that once the clients are able to update their websites independently, the relationship between client and web developer ends. This is not the case; on the contrary: content management systems can greatly improve client-designer affiliation and aid in establishing long-term relationships. Here’s why:

  • If the client takes care of the content, the designer is free to work on the larger picture. Be it search engine optimisation, link building or designing other websites, if the designer’s time is not filled with updating individual websites, he or she has more time to do other things.
  • The client will enjoy having control over the website and learn how to deal with it responsibly. Giving the customer access to the website establishes trust and helps build long-term relationships.
  • The web designer will still be in the picture as a consultant. As a designer, you will still advise on the content in terms of keyword density, web standards and content placement. Only the actual writing will be taken out of your hands.
  • Sharing the work means the website can be marketed online more efficiently. If designers do all the work, it takes double the time and will cost the client double the money. All the more reason to decide for a content management system.
  • It might cost more in the beginning, but will save money in the long run. The designer will initially have to include the cost for integrating a content management system and for training the client to use it, however in the long run the client will save real $ due to not having to call the designer every time a section on the website needs updating. It’s a sensible investment.
